The Tale of Gorkha River

### The Tale of Gorkha River
(By Naveen Singh Rana according to listened folks in their childhood with his grandfather late Prem Singh Rana whose feild near the Gorkha river and temple)

#### Beginning

Nogwa Nath village, known for its ancient culture and natural beauty, is home to a river called Gorkha River. The origin of this river is about one to one and a half kilometers away from the village, deep within the forest. A stream emerges from the earth and flows year-round without drying up. Behind the source and significance of this Gorkha River lies an emotional and inspiring folk tale.

#### Gorakhnath Baba's Temple

In Nogwa Nath village, there is a very ancient temple dedicated to Gorakhnath Baba. The temple's architecture is unique and ancient, reflecting the artistry and culture of our ancestors. This temple is closely linked to the Gorkha River, which the villagers still revere as a symbol of their faith.

#### Drought and Crisis

Long ago, a severe drought struck the region. Ponds, wells, and streams dried up, leading to a severe shortage of drinking water. The villagers were desperate and parched. In their desperation, they went to Gorakhnath Baba’s temple and pleaded with Baba Ji to rescue them from this crisis.

#### Baba Ji’s Penance

Gorakhnath Baba listened to the villagers’ plight and assured them he would find a solution. Baba Ji ventured into the forest and immersed himself in deep penance. After several days of intense meditation, a divine voice conveyed to Baba Ji that a stream would emerge from the very spot where he was meditating, and this stream would fulfill the people’s water needs for generations to come.

#### Divine Instructions

The divine voice instructed Baba Ji to follow the stream, which would flow behind him. However, he was warned not to look back, for if he did, the river would change its course. Baba Ji adhered to the divine instructions and began walking forward, with the stream following him.

#### The Mistake and Consequence

As Baba Ji was approaching the temple, a doubt crept into his mind. He wondered if the stream was still following him. To quell his doubt, he looked back. As soon as he turned around, the stream changed its course and diverted. It turned from the north towards the east and then flowed southward.

#### Present Evidence

Today, the peculiar bend of the Gorkha River can still be observed. The river continues to quench the thirst of the villagers and provides them with water. Due to Gorakhnath Baba’s penance and his sacrificial devotion, this river remains an integral part of our lives.

#### Conclusion

This folk tale is a testament to the greatness of our ancestors and the heritage of our culture, traditions, and beliefs. It teaches us that true devotion and penance never go in vain and that divine blessings are always with us, provided we maintain our faith and discipline. Blessed are our ancestors, who have bequeathed such inspiring stories to us.
