Gorkha River: A Folktale by Naveen Singh Rana

Gorkha River: A Folktale
From the pen of Naveen Singh Rana (The author had heard this folktale in his childhood from his grandfather Late Prem Singh Rana ji, near whose farm situated, this river flows and this temple is built.)

#### Start

Nogwa Nath village, where for longer time, Rana Tharu people stayed, andThe next generation of Kalu Bardiya used to live in this place, which is famous for its ancient culture and natural beauty, has a river flowing there which is known as Gorkha River. The origin of this river is located inside the forest about one to one and a half kilometers away from Nogwa Nath village, from where a water stream emerges from the womb of the earth. This water stream keeps flowing throughout the year and never dries up. There is an emotional and inspiring folklore behind the origin and importance of this Gorkha River.

#### Gorakh Nath Baba Temple

An ancient temple is situated in Nogwa Nath village, which is dedicated to Gorakh Nath Baba. The architecture of this temple is unique and ancient in itself, which reflects the art and culture of our ancestors. This temple has a deep connection with the Gorakh River, which even today the villagers consider a symbol of their faith.

#### Drought and crisis

It was a long time ago when there was a severe drought in that area. The ponds, wells, and streams all dried up and there was a great shortage of drinking water. The people of the village were yearning to quench their thirst and were living in despair. Then all the villagers reached the temple of Gorakh Nath Baba and prayed to Baba Ji to save them from this crisis.

#### Baba ji's penance

Gorakh Nath Baba heard the villagers' woes and assured them that he would find a solution to the problem. Baba Ji went to the forest and got involved in deep meditation there. After many days of meditation, a divine voice gave a message to Baba Ji that a water stream will emerge from the place where he is doing meditation, which will fulfill the water needs of the people for ages.

#### Divine Instructions

The divine voice instructed Baba Ji to follow the stream and the stream would follow him. But a warning was given that Baba Ji should not look back even by mistake, otherwise the river would change its direction. Baba Ji followed the divine instruction and started moving ahead following the stream.

#### Mistakes and consequences

When Babaji was about to reach his temple, a doubt arose in his mind whether the stream was following him or not. To remove this worry, he looked back. As soon as he looked back, the stream changed its direction and turned in the other direction. The stream went from north to east and then south.

#### Current Evidence

Even today, living evidence of this strange bend of the Gorkha river can be seen. This river still quenches the thirst of the people of the village and provides them with water. Due to the penance of Gorakh Nath Baba and his sacrificial devotion, this river is still an integral part of our lives.

#### ending

This folktale is a testimony to the greatness of our ancestors and a legacy of our culture, traditions and beliefs. This story teaches us that true devotion and penance never go in vain and the blessings of the divine powers are always with us, provided we maintain our faith and discipline. Blessed are our ancestors who have bequeathed us such inspiring stories.
